Newcastle Lit & Phil: Dr John Charlton will talk about The Wind from Peterloo, Tyneside’s response to the Peterloo Massacre
November 14 @ 19:00Free
Mike Leigh’s brilliant movie, Peterloo will be at a cinema near you very soon. Do not miss it. It means that this event known to most of us by its name alone will bring its story in all its gory detail to masses of people. It’s a real education in the readiness of the ruling class to act with savage brutality against working people when it feels its interests threatened.
What the movie does not do (it is already very long) is to show the storm of angry yet disciplined movement of protest which rolled across the country following the massacre at Manchester. Probably the largest such event was the great demonstration in Newcastle in October 1819. Even The Times, whose reporter you see on the platform in the movie, said there were 100,000 in the Newcastle streets and on the Town Moor. Astonishing by any standard!
On Wednesday 14 November, at 7 p.m. at the Lit & Phil, Westgate Road, Newcastle, John Charlton will tell the story in all its exciting detail. The talk is entitled THE WIND FROM PETERLOO-TYNESIDE OCTOBER 1819. Entry is free and all are welcome.
