NELH First Tuesday Meeting: Jude Murphy, the WEA in World War I in the North East
6 September 2016 @ 19:00 - 21:00
JUDE MURPHY, will speak on: THE WEA in WORLD WAR ONE in the NORTH EAST, BRINGING INTANGIBLE EVIDENCE TO LIFE
In 1914, the Workers’ Educational Association had been in the region for only four years, and people who had just begun to widen their horizons saw their lives dramatically changed by war. What happened to them?
The talk will explore how the idea of researching the WEA during WWI was conceived and the challenges involved in working on relatively intangible heritage when so many first world war heritage projects have been focused on specific memorials or localities. But there was also great potential for creativity among those involved, and the talk will focus on a few of our key research themes as well as some stories about the ways in which our volunteers engaged with this history that suggested an unbroken link between the early years of the WEA and the present day organisation.
