Its purpose was to stimulate economic development in the Tyneside and Wearside area\, and it had features unlike previous towns and which served as a model for subsequent developments. \nJohn Griffiths is an adult education lecturer whose specialities include urban history and planning history. He gained a PhD in 2020 for his thesis ‘Mr Newcastle: the career of T Dan Smith’ \n
