SUMMARY:Sacriston Working Men's Club. Sacriston\, 1926 - A lecture by Professor John Tomaney
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThis lecture explores Sacriston’s unique role during this turbulent period. \nOne hundred years ago\, Sacriston was in the grip of a historic industrial conflict. The short-lived General Strike\, in May 1926\, in the eyes of some\, had brought Britain to the brink of revolution. It was followed by the months-long Miners’ Lockout\, as coal owners attempted to force their workers to accept reduced pay and a longer working day. This conflict had national and international ramifications and brought great misery to mining communities. In several ways\, Sacriston found itself at the heart of the conflict. \nThis lecture will tell the story of Sacriston in 1926. Among the questions it will address are: who are the people on the Sacriston Lodge Banner\, and why are they there? How did a Sacriston miner’s wife end up in Soviet Russia\, addressing the massed ranks of the Red Army? Why were local councillors threatened with jail by the government? And it will tell the story of the extraordinary occasion that marked the opening of the Aged Miners’ Homes on Plawsworth Road in August 1926. \nProfessor John Tomaney is Pro-Provost (Regional Communities) and Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at University College London\, and a Trustee of Sacriston Youth Project. SUMMARY:North East Labour History Society. Annual General Meeting. Don Watson will be speaking about Amateur drama in the unemployed clubs of 1930s Britain
DESCRIPTION:In 1932 one government response to mass unemployment was to fund the National Council for Voluntary Service to set up clubs and social centres for the unemployed. They offered members materials and instruction in boot-repair\, carpentry\, and allotment gardening\, clothes making and alteration. Some like Rock House in Seaham and the Spennymoor Settlement also provided discussion-based adult education. Alongside this the British Drama League offered instructors in drama to develop amateur theatre groups among the members. Around half of the unemployed clubs on Tyneside had a drama group by 1938. \nThe talk will look at how impoverished communities were encouraged to make theatre through this scheme. It will take examples from around the country\, and discuss issues around unemployed men and women developing their own plays\, including plays about their own situations. These unemployed clubs were criticised both at the time and since as designed to distract the workless from their situation\, and to diffuse discontent and unrest. This talk will argue that nevertheless some independent spaces were opened up for social commentary\, participation and community theatre. \nDon Watson is a NELHS committee member. His book\, Theatre with a Purpose: Amateur Drama in Britain 1919-1949 was published by Methuen/Bloomsbury in 2024.

SUMMARY:The Olive Branch\, Stockton. Volunteers for Liberty Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:For the past seven years men from Teesside who volunteered to fight fascism and defended democracy during the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39 have been remembered at a special commemorative event\, thirty Two Teesside volunteers served in the International Brigade in Spain\, of these ten lost their lives. \nThis year our Teesside Volunteers for Liberty memorial event will be held in Stockton. \nAs part of its 2020 centenary the Communist Party of Britain worked with the Communist Party of Spain and the International Brigade Memorial Trust to host a series of wreath laying events across the country in honour of the Volunteers for Liberty who died fighting fascism in Spain\, these events were held on the anniversary of the International Brigade’s Farwell parade that had taken place on 28th October 1938.\n\nIn the North East of England the North East Volunteers for Liberty have worked with the Communist Party of Britain and the Communist Party of Spain to host annual events held simultaneously on Teesside and Newcastle. Last year we held a commemorative event in Sunderland for the first time.\nWhat makes these events very special is that we are joined by relatives of some of the Volunteers and relatives of some of the Basque refugee children who were evacuated to our area following the bombing of Guernica in 1937\, this year will be no exception. \nThis year we will hold the commemoration in The Songbird in Stockton – https://www.facebook.com/p/The-Songbird-61583615587234/ here we will especially remember the ten Teesside volunteers who lost their lives in Spain.\nBeneath the Stockton International Brigade Memorial we will especially remember the nine Stockton men who volunteered for the International Brigade\, especially Ron Dennison\, born in Stockton he was a Billingham town councillor before he left his home in Crescent Avenue\, Billingham to fight Fascism in Spain and tragically lost his life. DESCRIPTION:For the past seven years men from the North East of England who volunteered to fight fascism and defended democracy in the International Brigade during the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39 have been remembered at commemorative events organised by the North East Volunteers for Liberty\, these are held in Newcastle\, Sunderland and on Teesside; see – https://www.sunderlandecho.com/retro/sunderland-tyneside-heroes-fascism-1930s-5334267 \nThis year our Sunderland Volunteers for Liberty memorial event will be held with Seventeen Nineteen in The Holy Trinity Church\, Sunderland\, starting at 2pm on Sunday 1st November when we are not only honouring the volunteers but all those who supported the Spanish Republic\, with a special focus on the seafarers. \nAt our events we remember the thirty three volunteers from our region who lost their lives in Spain. In Sunderland we will focus on the twenty International Brigade volunteers from Sunderland and the four Sunderland Captains who defied Franco’s naval blockade. We will also share news on the campaign to erect two memorials: one to the victims of the 1832 North Sands massacre and one to the Four Sunderland Captains\, which we plan to erect in the Holy Trinity Church. Dr David Scott (https://profiles.open.ac.uk/david-scott) will give an address on the 1832 North Sands Massacres; two victims were buried in the Holy Trinity churchyard. \nWe will hear from representatives from the North East Volunteers for Liberty\, the Association of the UK Basque children\, the Associazione Nazionale Partigiani d’Italia\, Sister Mary Scholastica of the Sunderland Sailors’ mission and relatives of some of the volunteers: relatives of International Brigade volunteers and of ships captains. DESCRIPTION:Please note that the date for this meeting has been changed from 12 January 2027 to Tuesday 2 February 2027 \nThis will be a Zoom meeting. Zoom details to follow. \nSid Chaplin is often described in the context of the Durham coalfield\, which provided him with the material for his early writing.  In this talk\, based on research in the Sid Chaplin archive at Newcastle University\, Keith Jewitt describes the other world which Sid inhabited\, in conjunction with everyday life at the pit and within his family.  Sid became a well-loved figure both at home and in London’s highbrow literary circles\, although inevitably there were also tensions\, revealed in his richly detailed letters to friends.\n\nKeith Jewitt was born in Jarrow\, moved to Benton as a child\, and was lucky enough to see “Close the Coalhouse Door” (based on Sid Chaplin’s stories) in 1968.  He went on to study History at university and is now a semi-retired accountant with an interest in local history.
