SUMMARY:NELH Tuesday meeting. John Charlton will talk about The Two Souls of America
DESCRIPTION:Please note the new time for this meeting: 6:00pm\n\nThe USA is in our faces all the time\, whether it be the exotic behaviour of the current President\, the exploits of the super rich\, the increasingly open secrets of the late Jeffrey Epstein\, the neo-fascist activity of ICE or\, in our sitting rooms via Amazon and NETFLIX.\n\nYet there is another America\, if less known\, expressed in the growing impact of popular resistance: growing progressive political campaigns\, communities opposing ICE\, protecting migrants\, obstructing the spread of giant data centres\, and lower-level co-operative community activity.\n\nBoth sides of this are deeply rooted in American history from its origins.\n\nIn this talk John delves into both ‘souls\,’ hopefully casting some light and\, sparking discussion.\n\nJohn is a member of the NELHS Committee and the author of Hidden Chains: the slavery business and north east England.

SUMMARY:NOTE - DATE CHANGED. NELH Tuesday Meeting. Keith Jewitt will talk about: Sid Chaplin - a Writer's World
DESCRIPTION:Please note that the date for this meeting has been changed from 12 January 2027 to Tuesday 2 February 2027 \nThis will be a Zoom meeting. Zoom details to follow. \nSid Chaplin is often described in the context of the Durham coalfield\, which provided him with the material for his early writing.  In this talk\, based on research in the Sid Chaplin archive at Newcastle University\, Keith Jewitt describes the other world which Sid inhabited\, in conjunction with everyday life at the pit and within his family.  Sid became a well-loved figure both at home and in London’s highbrow literary circles\, although inevitably there were also tensions\, revealed in his richly detailed letters to friends.\n\nKeith Jewitt was born in Jarrow\, moved to Benton as a child\, and was lucky enough to see “Close the Coalhouse Door” (based on Sid Chaplin’s stories) in 1968.  He went on to study History at university and is now a semi-retired accountant with an interest in local history.
