The USA is in our faces all the time, whether it be the exotic behaviour of the current President, the exploits of the super rich, the increasingly open secrets of the late Jeffrey Epstein, the neo-fascist activity of ICE or, in our sitting rooms via Amazon and NETFLIX.
Yet there is another America, if less known, expressed in the growing impact of popular resistance: growing progressive political campaigns, communities opposing ICE, protecting migrants, obstructing the spread of giant data centres, and lower-level co-operative community activity.
Both sides of this are deeply rooted in American history from its origins.
In this talk John delves into both ‘souls,’ hopefully casting some light and, sparking discussion.
John is a member of the NELHS Committee and the author of Hidden Chains: the slavery business and North East England.
